The Outlook for the UK Economy in a General Election Year



Adam McGeoch, Deputy Agent for Scotland, Bank of England

Adam is an applied economist with expertise in business and industry modelling and analysis.
Prior to joining the Agency, Adam led Fraser of Allander Institute’s Business Analysis and Engagement work, including leading its quarterly business survey of Scottish firms. Adam was also a lecturer on Strathclyde University’s MSc. Applied Economics programme.

Adam is passionate about diversity and inclusion and has held many roles throughout his career which aim to improve equality in the economics profession.




What’s New in the World of Personal Insolvency in Scotland?



John Cook, Executive Director, The Accountant in Bankruptcy

John Cook joined the Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB) in 2005 after working for the Department for Work and Pensions. John is head of AiB’s Delivery, Digital & Business Development command which has responsibility for AiB’s personal insolvency and DAS operational functions and systems. John is Depute Accountant in Bankruptcy and an AiB board member. John was previously a Citizens Advice volunteer acting as a board member and latterly chair of North Ayrshire CAB.




Why Insolvency Practitioners need to know about ESG



Elaine Petterson, Partner, Brodies LLP

Elaine leads the Brodies’ real estate restructuring team and has extensive experience acting for insolvency practitioners and lenders in relation to distressed asset sales and providing advice on real estate issues arising as a result of insolvency, including the care home, retail and leisure sectors. Elaine has acted on more than 20 portfolio loan acquisitions in the last 10 years and has unrivalled experience in the non-performing loan market.



Janey Douglas, Head of Sustainability – UK Capital Markets, JLL

Janey is Head of Sustainability for UK Capital Markets at JLL and responsible for embedding Sustainability across the Capital Markets teams. Janey advises on investor strategies, tracks market trends, leads the integration of Sustainability into transactions and has supported the development of ESG due diligence products with JLL technical specialists. Janey has a transactional background, having originally joined JLL in 2013 working in the Capital Markets team based in Edinburgh where she worked across sectors in the Scottish Market.




Better Quality SARs for Law Enforcement



Michael Jones, Reporter Engagement Senior Officer, National Crime Agency (NCA)

Michael joined the NCA in 2019 and qualified as a Financial Intelligence Officer, previously posted to the UKFIU’s International Team. He’s experienced in sanitising and disseminating SAR intelligence for use in investigations overseas and has specialised knowledge of how SARs are exploited by domestic and global law enforcement. Michael is currently a Senior Officer on the UKFIU’s Reporter Engagement Team. The team is responsible for ensuring high quality SARs are submitted into the regime that provide lines of enquiry, victim safeguarding and asset seizure opportunities for law enforcement partners.




HMRC: Structure and Insolvency Customer Services Update



Alan Bean, Business Advisor Lead – Insolvency Team, HMRC

Alan moved to the Business Delivery Insolvency Team in December 2022 and is based in the Glasgow Regional Office. As part of the Customer Services Group Insolvency team, he is responsible for reviewing and streamlining HMRC’s internal processes to improve the customer journey for Insolvency Practitioners, with IPs being his core customer base.

Having built strong professional relationships with IP firms over many years, Alan is delighted that External Stakeholder Engagement is also part of his portfolio of work with the Insolvency Team, and is striving to promote more effective engagement between HMRC and private sector insolvency professionals.



Carol Carmichael, Business Advisor Lead – Insolvency Team, HMRC

Carol joined HMRC in 2004, initially working in Personal Tax Operations before moving into Operational Excellence in 2017.

Carol is currently the Business Advisor Lead within the Insolvency Team and engages with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels including Senior Leaders, Product and Process Owners, Customer Service Group Operations, Customer Strategy & Tax Design, Chief Digital Office and external bodies within insolvency as well as other government departments, to deliver continuous improvement and transformational change for insolvency across Customer Service Group. Carol works closely with the Insolvency Claims Handling Unit/Enforcement & Insolvency in Debt Management, Business Tax & Customs and Customer Compliance Group to improve the Insolvency Practitioner customer journey, delivering value for money and demonstrating savings by making more effective and efficient use of HMRC and public resources.




Legal Insights and Practical Tips for Insolvency Professionals



Lucy McCann, Partner, Brodies LLP

Lucy advises on all aspects of personal and corporate insolvency and obtained her Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency in 2011. She acts on behalf of a wide range of clients, including lenders, insolvency professionals, commercial creditors, directors and individuals. Lucy is frequently called upon to advise on asset recovery, challenges of pre-insolvency transactions, directors’ misfeasance and a wide range of technical insolvency issues.



Nicky-Ray Watson, Senior Associate, Brodies LLP

Nicky-Ray specialises in contentious insolvency matters, advising insolvency practitioners, companies, individuals, and organisations within the public and private sector. He has a particular focus on personal insolvency and is regularly instructed in court actions to recover assets for the benefit of insolvent estates, as well as all other matters that arise from the sequestration process. He also deals with corporate insolvency matters.

Andrew Murphy, Associate Director, Manolete Partners PLC

Andrew joined Manolete in March 2023 from Blake Morgan’s insolvency team. He qualified as a solicitor in 2012 and was previously Head of Insolvency at JCP Solicitors in South Wales, before moving to an offshore insolvency and trusts litigation role at Appleby’s Guernsey office. Ranked in the 2018 edition of the Legal 500 as a “Leading Individual” for restructuring and insolvency, Andrew enjoyed a varied portfolio of contentious and non-contentious insolvency work in private practice, predominantly acting for insolvency office holders and high street lenders.




Navigating the Regulatory Landscape in 2024



Rowan Duffin-Jones, Senior Regulation Officer, IPA

Rowan is JIEB qualified and has over thirty years’ insolvency experience gained with leading firms in London, dealing with both personal and corporate insolvency.

Rowan is secretary to the IPA Standards Ethics and Regulatory Liaison Committee, also leading on the IPA Secretariat operational responsibility for the Registered Property Receivers’ scheme.



Eileen Maclean, Director, Insolvency Support Services

Eileen is a licensed insolvency practitioner with over 33 years’ experience of personal and corporate insolvency. She is the founding director of Insolvency Support Services, an award-winning provider of training, outsourcing and compliance services to the UK insolvency market.

Eileen is licensed by the IPA, sits on the IPA’s Board and chairs the IPA’s Standards, Ethics & Regulatory Liaison Committee. She is also a member of the IPA’s Anti-Money Laundering Committee. She represents the IPA on the AiB’s PTD Standing Committee, Bankruptcy Stakeholder Group and Policy and Cases Committee, and the Scottish Government’s Scottish Statutory Debt Solutions Forum.
