Membership, Licencing, and Exams

The IPA authorises and regulates Insolvency Practitioners, sets the standards for professional qualifications, and supports members throughout their careers.
The UK’s leading insolvency regulator and professional body

Individual membership

The IPA offers three categories of individual membership for those working in insolvency practice, those new to the profession, and those working in insolvency-related fields. Select the category that best reflects your experience and career stage.

For those who are working in insolvency practice. If you are currently a Student or Associate Member contact the IPA Membership Team.

For those looking to take an insolvency exam or to advance their career in insolvency practice or related business, financial, accounting or legal fields; or just interested in knowing more about insolvency.

For those who have passed the CPI, CPPI, or JIE, or are working in insolvency related fields, or who have made a contribution to the knowledge and practice of insolvency.

Why join the IPA?

The IPA is the only recognised professional body exclusively concerned with insolvency, looking to set the agenda for the future of the profession and promoting its reputation among its many and diverse stakeholders. It leads in the profession and in the media on current issues such as individual voluntary arrangements and debt management companies; better regulation and the increasing focus on efficiency, value and outcomes for creditors; standards and the need to revisit and modernise statements of insolvency practice; and “whistleblowing”.

  • determine the IPA’s stance and action on current issues such as consumer over-indebtedness and debt solutions
  • determine the shape and future direction of regulation
  • influence government policy through representation
  • set financial budgets, subscriptions and fees
  • develop and advise on policy, practice, ethics and standards
  • consider Insolvency Practitioner standards and professional conduct
  • promote the insolvency profession
  • learn more about standards and how regulation works
  • design opportunities for networking and events
  • set and mark the IPA’s professional exams
  • look at how the IPA can extend its reach to others involved in or having an interest in insolvency
  • attract new and more diverse people to the profession.

Membership for insolvency firms

IPA firm membership offers insolvency practices a streamlined route to managing their practitioners’ licences, alongside reduced fees, enhanced voting rights and direct influence over the direction of the IPA and profession.

Firm membership

Firm membership is open to practices with at least one IPA-licensed Insolvency Practitioner. It provides a range of administrative and governance benefits, including onboarding packages for groups of practitioners and enhanced representation at General Meetings.
