Inspired by Leadership: David Buchler on What Makes an Outstanding Contribution

As the Insolvency Practitioners Association prepares for the 2025 IPA Awards, anticipation is building across the profession. These awards are more than a night of celebration – they are a recognition of integrity, perseverance, and excellence within a field that often works quietly behind the scenes to safeguard businesses, jobs, and communities.
At the heart of last year’s ceremony was a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the profession: David Buchler, Chairman of Buchler Phillips, receiving the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award.
With a career spanning more than half a century, David Buchler’s story is one of dedication, innovation, and leadership. From his early days as a Partner at Arthur Andersen to co-founding Buchler Phillips – one of the UK’s leading financial recovery and restructuring specialists – and later serving as Chairman of Kroll for Europe and Africa, Buchler’s influence has been profound. A former R3 President, Vice-Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, and Deputy Chairman of the English National Opera, he has brought his expertise to over 1,000 assignments throughout his remarkable career.
Beyond his impressive résumé, David’s contribution lies in his authenticity as a leader – mentoring countless insolvency practitioners who have gone on to establish their own successful paths, and consistently taking on challenging cases others might avoid, driven by his desire to help creditors and stakeholders find fair outcomes.
When asked what receiving the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award meant to him, David reflected with humility and gratitude:
“Receiving the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession award is a deeply meaningful honour for me. It represents not only a personal milestone, but also a reflection of the shared journey I’ve had with so many exceptional colleagues and professionals across the insolvency and restructuring community. This field has given me immense professional fulfilment and purpose over the years, and to be recognised by the IPA – an organisation I greatly respect – is both humbling and gratifying. It reaffirms my belief in the value of collaboration, integrity, and service, which have always been at the heart of our profession and of my own approach to leadership.”
It’s this spirit of collaboration and service that lies at the heart of the IPA Awards. They don’t just honour success – they celebrate the people and principles that keep the profession strong and forward-looking.
Speaking about what defines an “outstanding contribution,” David shared a message that resonates deeply across the industry:
“An outstanding contribution is rarely the result of individual effort alone. It comes from a sustained commitment to professionalism, ethical practice, and a willingness to support and develop others along the way. For me, it’s about helping to strengthen the foundations of the profession – ensuring that we uphold trust, transparency, and fairness in everything we do. I hope this recognition serves as encouragement to others to contribute in ways that create lasting value, whether through mentorship, innovation, or the consistent pursuit of excellence in service to clients and the wider community.”
As the IPA looks ahead to 2025, this message carries even more significance. The landscape of insolvency and restructuring continues to evolve – with new challenges, new technologies, and new opportunities for professionals to make a positive impact.
And for the next generation of nominees, David’s words offer a powerful reminder of what it truly means to excel:
“These awards are a vital reminder of the high standards our profession strives to maintain and of the dedication that underpins those achievements. To the nominees and future winners, I would say: take great pride in your work, and in the positive impact it has on the businesses and individuals you serve. Excellence in our field comes not only from technical skill, but from compassion, integrity, and perseverance. The IPA Awards provide an opportunity to recognise these values and to celebrate the professionalism that defines our community – something we should all be proud to uphold.”
As the 2025 IPA Awards approach, the call goes out to all professionals who embody these values – those who go the extra mile, who lead with integrity, and who strengthen the profession for future generations.
The IPA Awards are not just about recognising achievement – they’re about honouring the character, commitment, and collaboration that make insolvency and restructuring one of the most vital and respected professions in business today.
Join us in 2025 to celebrate excellence, dedication, and the people who make a lasting difference.
